In Maharashtra, India, the Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit (MRT) system that serves both the city of Mumbai and the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is in charge of overseeing the upkeep of the metro system. The system is designed to reduce traffic congestion in the city, and supplement the overcrowded Mumbai Suburban Railway network.It is being constructed over a 15-year period in three parts, with an anticipated completion date of October 2026. As of January 2023, the Mumbai Metro had an operational length of 46.4 km (28.8 mi), making it the sixth-longest metro network in India. When completed, the core system will consist of 14 high-capacity metro railway lines and 1 metrolite line, spanning 356.972 kilometers (221.812 mi) (24% underground, the rest elevated, with a minor section built at-grade) and serviced by 286 stations. The Mumbai Metro construction plan began to take shape in 2006 when, according to the Mumbai Metro map, the foundation stone for phase-I was placed with the goal of offering alternate connectivity to Mumbai residents. The Mumbai metro routes project, however, was delayed as a result of operational and policy issues.

Mumbai has 14 metro routes, which are color coded and are also identified by numbers. Currently Mumbai has a total of 3 metro lines that are operational namely the Blue line( Line 1), Yellow line(Line 2A) and Red line(Line 7). In Mumbai, 3 metro routes have received approval, and 8 are currently being built. Other metro routes in Mumbai that are under construction include Metro Line 2B (D N Nagar to Mandale), Metro Line 4 & 4A (Wadala-Kasarvadavali–Gaimukh), Metro Line 5 (Thane to Kalyan), Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli), and Metro Line 9 (Andheri to CSIA and Dahisar to Mira Bhayander).

Latest Update:

Only three routes of the Mumbai Metro are currently operational. Two of them are new Mumbai metro lines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Metro lines 2A and 7 on January 19, 2023.

The MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) began testing these two metro lines in October 2022. Once Line 2A and Line 7 of the Mumbai Metro are fully operational, they would each be able to accommodate close to 3 lakh passengers each day. An estimated Rs 6,410 crore would go towards the Line 2A Mumbai metro project. There will be two interchanges for the Mumbai Metro lines 2 A and 7—one in Dahisar and the other at the DN Nagar metro station, which will connect to the current Mumbai Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar and Versova). New metro routes Mumbai Metro 2A's first phase is from Dahisar to Dahanykarwadi, and Metro 7's first phase is from Dahisar to Aarey colony.

The Mumbai 1 smartphone app, which will feature all the information about the Mumbai metro system and also assist with online ticket purchases via UPI, is also scheduled for launch. Mumbai Metro will be compatible with the One Nation, One Card- inspired National Common Mobility Card as well.
